Recommended day trips in the Phillip Island & Promontory Country Region

The Promontory country region offers easy day trips from Phillip Island. The main attractions are listed below, or an easy drive can be taken to any of the fascinating towns throughout the region as they all have something different to offer.

State Coal Mine

Relive the mining experiences of the past with a guided tour at the State Coal Mine, situated at Wonthaggi approximately 40km from Phillip Island. Guided tours are offered to visitors by experienced ex-miners, who will tell you of the amazing history of coal mining in South Gippsland.

Wilson's Promontory National Park

You will need to spend a day at this park to appreciate its spectacular views, beaches, walking tracks, fauna and flora. Located approximately 170km from Phillip Island, it is the most southern point of mainland Australia. Suggested route via Wonthaggi, Leongatha, Koonwarra, Meenyan and Foster, and return Fish Creek, Tarwin Lower and Inverloch. Plenty of craft, antiques and wineries along the way.

The Bass Hills

Take a drive up into the hills from Glen Alvie at the Corinella turn-off on the Bass Highway, and be rewarded with magnificent views of Western Port, Phillip Island and French Island, then travel back down through the small towns of Archies Creek, Dalyston and Kilcunda.

Coal Creek

At Coal Creek step back in time, and spend the day experiencing life as it was 100 years ago. This mining village has been recreated and the buildings restored to their original splendor. You will need the whole day as there is so much to see and do. Situated 75 km from Phillip Island.

Tarra Bulga National Park

Is situated in the Strzelecki Ranges, featuring the majestic giant banksias, manna gums and mountain ashes, and boasts one of only four cool temperate rainforests.
