Have you ever thought about what you can do to help Australian wildlife, while also having fun?
Well, here is the event for you. This year Maru Koala and Animal Park have partnered up with the ASZK (the Australasian Society of Zoo Keeping) and the Phillip Island Bowling and Entertainment Centre to host a Bowling for Kroombit Tinker Frogs event.
This event puts the ‘fun’ back into fundraisers while also raising some much needed support for Australian conservation.
Every year ASZK host events all over Australia to support endangered animals and this year the focus is on the work carried out by Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary where they have been working very hard to save the Tinker Frogs from extinction by creating insurance populations, release pro rams and their constant breeding program. All of these efforts are costly to all involved and take years to be successful so ASZK have decided to assist Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary to raise awareness and funds.
For those of you that do not know these Tinker Frogs (Taudactylus Pleione), that’s fine, most people don’t as there are less than 15 individuals left in the wild. This makes the work done at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary vital in preventing the species from becoming extinct.
These frogs are found in the rainforests of the Gladstone or Kroombit ranges in Queensland but have become so isolated that they only occupy a range of 18km2 with 9 known populations within this.
There have been many factors affecting these frogs including the Chytrid Fungus or
Chytridiomycosis which attacks the keratin in the skin of frogs, which they use for respiration, resulting in the death of individuals. All amphibians are at risk but the Tinker Frogs are critically endangered, therefore action must be taken now.
